Late January, somewhere on Scottsdale Road: the rental car has not moved in nine minutes. WestWorld is a mile ahead and the parking field is already a slow river of brake lights. Your group flew in for the auction, or the golf, or the client dinner built around one of them, and the plan for the rest of the week is vague.
Three thousand feet above that same intersection, the Valley looks nothing like a traffic problem. Camelback Mountain throws a long shadow across Paradise Valley. The McDowells run north in folded ridgelines. You can see the auction tents at WestWorld, the stadium holes at TPC Scottsdale, Old Town, and raw Sonoran Desert in one turn of the head, and twenty minutes later be standing on a summit with no trail to it.
That is the part of Scottsdale’s event season almost nobody books, and it is the part people still talk about a year later.
Why Scottsdale’s Event Season Is the Best and Worst Time to Be Here
From late January through March, the Valley runs at full volume. Barrett-Jackson fills WestWorld of Scottsdale in late January. The WM Phoenix Open turns TPC Scottsdale into the loudest week in professional golf in February. Spring training opens in late February. Add the conference calendar at the resorts along Scottsdale Road, and you get a stretch of weeks where the weather is perfect, the city is packed, and every restaurant worth eating at was booked six weeks ago.
The upside is the sky. Winter in Arizona delivers the clearest air of the year, long golden light in the late afternoon, and smooth, stable flying conditions. Visibility on a January morning routinely runs past a hundred miles. This is the season this landscape was made to be seen from above.
The catch is simple. Event weeks sell out, and that includes us. We fly a single aircraft, an Airbus AS350-B2 A-Star we call SaberCat1, and every flight is private to your party. That is the whole point of how we operate, and it also means Barrett-Jackson week and Phoenix Open week fill early.
An Hour That Reframes the Entire Trip
Most visitors budget their Arizona time in half-days. A round of golf. An afternoon at the auction. A dinner. The helicopter is the one thing on that list that takes a fraction of the time and changes how everything else looks.
Our 1 Hour Adventure covers the full sweep of the Valley: the resort corridor and Old Town, Camelback and Mummy Mountain, the Salt River cutting east toward Saguaro Lake, Four Peaks on the horizon, the Superstition Mountains, and saguaro forests most people only ever see from a road. The cabin is fully air conditioned, the headsets are live, and the pilot flying you is narrating what you are looking at rather than reading a script.
If you only have one window in a packed week, make it the Mountain Top Landing. We set down on a remote desert summit with no trail, no other people, and no way up except the way you arrived. You step out onto the rock, the rotor winds down, and the desert goes completely quiet. Couples use it for anniversaries and proposals. Executives use it for the ten minutes of perspective they did not know they needed. During event season it is the first thing to go.
The Grand Canyon, on a Day You Thought You Didn’t Have
Driving to the Grand Canyon from Scottsdale is most of a day in each direction, which is why almost no one in town for a four-day event does it. Flying changes that math entirely.
The Grand Canyon Experience takes you north over the Mogollon Rim and the high country, across territory that stays empty for a very long time, and then delivers the moment the ground simply ends and the Canyon opens up underneath you. For visitors who want the Canyon and Sedona’s red rock country in one outing, the Ultimate Arizona links them together, and the Sedona Experience covers Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock, and Oak Creek Canyon on its own. During event season, book these for the day before your event starts or the day after it ends, when the Valley’s road traffic is somebody else’s problem.
For Groups, Conferences, and the DMC Running the Whole Program
A good share of our event-season flying is for groups, and most of it comes through destination management companies and planners who need an activity that does not feel like an activity.
The H5 Hangar Group Experience puts your group inside our private hangar in the Scottsdale Airpark, with the aircraft parked in the room and the big doors open to the tarmac. Guests rotate through flights in small private groups while the hangar holds the reception, the dinner, the awards presentation, or the kickoff. It handles groups of up to roughly sixty. We have run incentive trips, board retreats, client appreciation evenings, and sales kickoffs in that space, and the common thread is that nobody checks their phone.
For executive travel, Custom Charter covers point-to-point flying across Arizona and the Southwest on your schedule. We sit adjacent to Scottsdale Airport, so a group arriving by private jet can be in the air again within minutes of landing.
Quick Answers About Flying During Scottsdale’s Event Season
How far in advance should I book a helicopter tour during Barrett-Jackson or the WM Phoenix Open?
Four to six weeks out, at least. H5 Helicopters operates a single aircraft and flies private groups only, so the schedule during late January and February fills well ahead of the dates.
Is January or February a good time for a helicopter tour in Arizona?
It is the best time. Winter brings the clearest air, the most comfortable temperatures, and smooth flying conditions, with visibility that often reaches more than a hundred miles.
How many people can fly on one helicopter tour?
Up to five passengers per flight, within an 850 pound total passenger weight limit, and that limit may be lower on certain flights. Larger parties fly in rotating private groups, which is how the H5 Hangar Group Experience handles up to about sixty people.
Who is flying the helicopter?
Mitch, our owner and chief pilot, or Steve. Between them they have more than fifty-five years of experience and a perfect safety record. H5 is veteran owned and family run, and has flown aerial work for Apple TV, Netflix, National Geographic, IMAX, Red Bull, and Discovery.
